What to do with (out) sugar?
2. Fed Up
Narrated by Katie Couric and featuring Dr. Robert Lustig above (one of many experts featured), this documentary explores the obesity epidemic in America, presenting evidence that sugar is the culprit. Synposis from Wikipedia: “Fed Up shows how the first dietary guidelines issued by the U.S. government 30 years ago overlooked the role of dietary sugar in increasing risks of obesity, diabetes, and associated ill-health outcomes, particularly in children. Since these guidelines effectively condoned unlimited addition of sugar to foods consumed by children, sugar consumption has greatly increased, obesity has skyrocketed, and generations of children have grown up far fatter than their parents. These children face impaired health and shorter lifespans as a result. As the relationship between the high-sugar diet and poor health has emerged, entrenched sugar industry interests with almost unlimited financial lobbying resources have beaten back attempts by parents, schools, states, and in Congress to provide a healthier diet for children.” Watch the trailer! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCUbvOwwfWM I |
1) Sugar: The Bitter Truth
This is a presentation by Dr. Robert Lustig, pediatric endocrinologist and professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Check out his lecture at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM#t=32 He explains how fructose is a toxin, and how sugars are metabolized differently in the body. My big take-away that I was unsure of before is that “a calorie is not a calorie”. Your body handles calories from different foods in different ways and certain foods (containing certain sugars) can most definitely make you fatter than others. The science gets a little confusing but he does a great job of breaking it down. A website was set up, partly funded by dr. Lustig; http://www.responsiblefoods.org/ On the website you can find loads of information , updates on the latest research , recipes and much much more.
